Tips for Kiwis in Korea

Everything you need for a sweet as trip

Uber doesn't work here — get Kakao T

Neither Uber nor any NZ ride app works in Korea. Download Kakao T: shows the fare before you hop in and translates your destination for the driver. Easy as.

Naver Map beats Google Maps

Google Maps is alright for basics, but Naver Map is way better for public transport. Has English mode, real-time metro and bus info, and walking directions that actually make sense.

T-money card — your transport pass

Grab one at any convenience store (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven). Top it up and tap on for metro, buses, even use it at shops. About NZ$4 gets you a whole day of transport.

NZ passport = visa-free 90 days

Good news — NZ passport holders don't need K-ETA or a visa for South Korea. Just rock up with your passport and you're sweet for up to 90 days.

Korean food is unreal

Samgyeopsal (BBQ pork belly — they cook it at your table), chimaek (fried chicken + beer — trust us), and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes — a must). If you can handle spice, say "maewoon" and they'll sort you out.

What to do in Korea

Korea's got heaps on offer beyond K-pop and K-drama (though those are mint too). Here's what Kiwis love:

FAQs

Everything you need to know, no fine print

Do I need to buy a SIM at Incheon Airport?
Nah, not at all. eSIM is fully digital: buy online, scan the QR and you're sorted. Set it up at home before you fly and you'll land at Incheon with 5G already working. No queues, no mucking about.
Cheaper than Spark roaming?
Heaps cheaper. Spark charges $10-20/day for Korea roaming with limited data. Our unlimited 5G eSIM works out to about $3.50/day on a weekly plan. You'll save a stack.
Will my NZ number still work?
Yep! Dual SIM means your Spark, One NZ, or 2degrees SIM stays active. Calls, texts, and bank codes all come through as per usual. The eSIM just handles your data.
Can I livestream and video call?
Absolutely! Korean 5G is some of the fastest in the world. Livestreaming, FaceTime, WhatsApp video calls — all buttery smooth. Share your trip in real time, no worries.
Which phones support eSIM?
iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20+, Google Pixel 3+ and most recent Android phones. If your phone has an eSIM option in Settings, you're good to go. Not sure? Just ask us.
Can I share data as a hotspot?
Sure can! Share your connection with your laptop, tablet, or your mates' phones. All plans include hotspot. Unlimited plans get unlimited hotspot too.
